yesI wonder how many of you remember that classic scene from Monty Python's The Life of Brian.

Set two thousand years ago in the Holy Land, rebellious residents are rising up against the Roman Empire - and the following exchange takes place:

Brian: "Excuse me. Are you the Judean People's Front?"

Reg: "F*** off! We're the People's Front of Judea!"

Well, I was reminded of that scene earlier today, when we received a complaint from a pro-Palestinian activist who had featured in a story we did the day before.

This was a report from the docks in Athens about a couple of vessels taking part in the Freedom Flotilla heading towards Gaza.

The flotilla, consisting of eight ships in total at our last count, intends to bring badly needed medical equipment, water treatment systems, building materials - and goodwill - to the besieged people of the Gaza Strip.

However, it soon became clear that there was not much goodwill between the various groups making up the flotilla.

The complaint concerned how we had described the activist. We had referred to him as a member of the "Free Gaza Movement".

"I was with the Free Gaza Movement," he explained.

"But now I should be described as a representative of the Free Palestine Movement."

Uh-oh. Free Gaza Movement/Free Palestine Movement?

Judean People's Front/People's Front of Judea?

We appeared to be descending into a moment of comedy, with the different factions vying for credit.

But then the comedy took a sour turn. I was shown another email, sent to our interviewee by a woman belonging to the "Free Gaza Movement", complaining that he appeared to be using their name.

yes"You do this ONE more time, and we will make sure you never even make it to the next drop off point," the woman fulminates.

"You are nothing but a passenger. That's fine as far as we are concerned, but we will call our contacts at Al Jazeera and embarrass the hell out of you if we see this again."

NGOs, Listen up! Journalists are not interested in your feuds and your rivalries.

We are interested in the story - which is, I hope we can all agree, Israeli's blockade of Gaza. yeah right

It seems tragic and irresponsible that energy and resources are being squandered on petty infighting when they should be directed towards what is supposedly their common goal: helping 1.5 million Palestinians who are living under siege.

Näin BaFin kielsi viime viikolla shorttauksen useilla arvopapereilla, kuten euroalueen valtionlainoilla, cds-johdannaisilla johtavien saksalais-finanssifirmojen osakkeilla, ensi vuoden maaliskuun loppuun asti.

the sky, i’m realizing, is a realm of unapologetic bruta.
i think that makes me love it more- the bright devastating rain,

the lightning, the wind
which always is leaving. and atmosphere itself: the fact that something
as slight as a haze is at once enough to give us life and

keep us humble.
what seems impenetrable by day is by night so skeletal
and delicate that i remember the entirety of the nonsensical melodrama is contained upon a rock, a miraculous desolate . electric little rock,
floating through infinite somethingness; remember

that we are small animals, soft animals, fragile animals. animals who all break and who all are eventually broken. not special poem ill find

BP, Coast Guard Officers Block Journalists From Filming Oil-Covered Beach

Emerging reports are raising the question of just how much of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill journalists are able to document.

When CBS tried to film a beach with heavy oil on the shore in South Pass, Louisiana, a boat of BP contractors, and two Coast Guard officers, told them to turn around, or be arrested.

“This is BP’s rules, it’s not ours,” someone aboard the boat said. Coast Guard officials told CBS that they’re looking into it.

As the Coast Guard is a branch of the Armed Forces, it brings into question how closely the government and BP are working together to keep details of the disaster in the dark.

Yleislakko on jo neljäs sitten helmikuun. superfluidity
What ancient Greek and Roman works do you think you'll be rereading in your 70s? Why?
tragos

I can’t wait to find out the answer to this question. I should say, rather, it will be interesting: I’m in no rush. One of my dear friends, who was lucky enough to study Russian with Nabokov at Wellesley, once told me that she has read Lolita five times throughout her life, and that it seemed very different each time, in broad terms becoming less funny and more heartbreaking. She also predicted that different Shakespeare plays would speak to me as I aged. Life would prove a little disappointing if I’m not surprised at what ancient works I find most engaging later in life, but I suspect that it will include a handful of my favorite authors.

Among the Greeks, I’m sure that I will still be reading Homer and Pindar. They both have a great deal to say about living and dying but in very different ways. The Homeric poems flow effortlessly and rely on narrative; Pindar’s poems are dense and depend on images. The Iliad and the Odyssey have a remarkable ability to take on new meaning for each new generation. Pindar is far less read for several reasons, not the least of which is his great reluctance to be translated, but his poems contain a treasure of images and metaphors and insight. I also think that I will be reading tragedy. Right now I would say that Aeschylus is my favorite, but I’ll be interested to see if that changes in the future.

I think in some ways the Roman writers will be more interesting. Latin literature hasn’t captured my attention in the same way that the Greeks have, but I’ve been coming around to a few authors in the past few years, and so I wonder how I will feel decades from now. The situation could be very different. I think that I will be reading Ovid for sure. He is the greatest Roman writer in my opinion. He not only forged new literary terrain, but he was a master of several different genres. The Metamorphoses, even considering its high reputation, is too often considered merely light and enjoyable, but it is incredibly complex in language and structure. It defies genre and comprises an extended meditation on the nature of time and life and definition and individuality. I’ve only recently discovered Latin elegy and it is the type of thing I hope to be reading on a porch in a valley on a summer evening when I’m too old to stretch out in a field somewhere.

Even more interesting perhaps are things that I enjoy now but which I suspect that I won’t be reading later in life. There is a chance that I’ll be reading Thucydides and Sallust, and a slightly better chance that I’ll be reading Herodotus and Lucretius, but for some reason I think they will speak to me less strongly after a full lifetime of my own. I’m very interested in Plato and Aristotle but I don’t think I’ll still be reading them, except maybe the dialogues about the trial and death of Socrates.

One of the reasons I find it valuable to read ancient literature is that after the alien cultural elements are appreciated, the deepest human concerns stand out more vividly. I think, however, that my reading will be less centered on Classical literature in a decade or so. If I have to make a broad prediction about my reading, or maybe this is really my hope, I would say that in the past ten years it has tended to move away from poetry and fiction to non-fiction prose, but I desperately hope, and I think it would be more healthy for my soul, if it trends back to fiction and poetry later in life, or maybe even sooner.

Samaa puolue on tähdentänyt eduskunnan käsitellessä Kreikan tukipakettia.

Keskusrikospoliisi on käyttänyt pakkokeinoja keskustan puoluetoimiston tiloissa. Rikostarkastaja Erkki Rossi vahvisti tiedon Helsingin Sanomille perjantaina.

Hänen mukaansa pakkokeinot eivät liity keskustapuolueen toimintaan, vaan kyse on Rovaniemen kelkkatehtaan rakentamiseen liittyvistä epäselvyyksistä.

Pääministeri Matti Vanhanen kommentoi asiaa lyhyesti eduskunnassa ennen suuren valiokunnan kokousta.

Props to the Prez
Not always, but sometimes, I am glad my grandmother was a gypsy. This wasn't a nickname, she was a real gypsy and told fortunes, among other things for a living. She imparted her wisdom regarding fortune telling to me and it really works. I'm good at telling fortunes and perhaps would tell you the secret of the scam but not today. You'd have to ask me really nice for me tell you that. Yes, I did use the word scam, by the way because it was one. People choose their futures, at least according to my grandmother. Suggesting you can see into the future suggests it's actually there to see, which it isn't. When I was younger I would use my powers to impress people and that works too. Even today, people ask, can you really tell fortunes?; in my mind I say, "yes, if you think I can".
So, when I suggest that my friend and confidant, Barack Obama, can really see the future, this is no faint praise. This is the acknowledgement of someone who knows a thing or two about how this works.
Harken back if you will to that magic time of the 2008 campaign, where ever gaffe was a headline, every move, a controversy, and every slip of the truth, food for the zoo animals, excuse me I mean voting public.
Soothesayer Obama made that rather candid observation about how people who cling to their guns and religion do so out of fear and ignorance. These were not his exact words, and I'm too lazy to look them up and I have enough twitter friends with OCD to correct my inprecision, BUT, this was essentially what he said and perhaps the word "cling" was badly chosen but the uproar was audible. Golly, Hilary Clinton even defended this poor offended mass as misunderstood by the urban savvy elitist hoops player who couldn't bowl.
Well, my friends, this week's news should offer our President the opportunity to sit back, put his feet up and smirkingly say, "Hey, I told ya so!"
Like the oracle of Delphi predicted these pigeons have come to roost. The fearful clinging mob of clearly undertstood clowns are just where Obama said they would be. Admit it, Obama called these folks out plain and simple. Journalists are now knee deep in a story they claimed was Obama's gaffe. It ironically turns out, oh great journalists of American politics, that the gaffe was yours.
I think we need to step back from the circus show for a day or two and give our props to the Prez. The headllines should read
